Autumn is just around the corner! If you want to catch beautiful autumn leaves in Hokkadio, Late September to October tends to be the best bet. Here are the 5 best spots for autumn leaves that are lesser-known but absolutely gorgeous in Eastern Hokkaido. Enjoy stunning autumn views with no crowd!
Lake Onneto
The combination of a clear-water lake, colorful autumn leaves and mountains is just incredible. Lake Onneto is one of my favorite lakes, and I love it most in Autumn! The area is quiet and peaceful, which is perfect for you to stroll and enjoy the view around the lake.

2. Takimi Bridge
"Takimi Bridge" literally means "a bridge to see a waterfall." The view from the bridge is especially gorgeous when surrounded by vivid yellow and orange colors. If you go to Akan in Autumn, this is a must-see! The parking lot is just 4 min (4 km) away from the central Akan by car.
3. Milky Way Waterfall
Another beautiful waterfall surrounded by autumn leaves is Milky Way Waterfall in Sounkyo. The silky stream of water perfectly decorates the cliff with colors. Especially the view from a lookout is incredible! Only a 20 min uphill walk will bring you there from the waterfall, so don’t miss it out!

4. Ropeway in Sounkyo
Taking “Daisetsuzan Sounkyo Kurodake Ropeway” is a great way to enjoy a mountain landscape with beautiful autumn leaves. The ropeway runs halfway up Mount Kurodake from Sounkyo, a range of gorges located in Kamikawa Town.
The ropeway station is located in the Sounkyo Onsen Town, and also 5 min (3.2 km) drive away from Milky Way Waterfall, so you can visit both spots in one day!

5. Just Random Parks…
You know what, beautiful autumn leaves in the Eastern Hokkaido can be found not only in the touristy spots, but also in any random public park.
Public parks here are full of trees and flowers. You don’t have to go far away to see the beautiful fall colors actually. Explore the neighborhood of where you stay, and find a amazing view reserved just for you!
