Onneto: Beautiful Hidden Lake in Hokkaido
This 2.5 km-around lake is in the Akan-Mashu National Park. The name "Onneto" comes from the words of Ainu (Hokkaido indigenous people) meaning "old pond." It is considered as one of the three most hidden lakes in Hokkaido, though it is not difficult to reach. Once you get there, you will be greeted with the amazing colors of the lake and its natural surroundings.
How incredible is this view with color-changing trees and a majestic mountain behind? The lake shows you many different faces depending on from which side you looks at it, time of the day when you visit there and also which season. That is why it is also known as "five-color pond". You can just chill on the lake side and enjoy the view, or take a trail around the lake to find the best angle at which the two mountains nicely reflect on the surface of the lake!
I like taking a detour to visit this lake on the way from Kitami to Akan, which is a small town with another beautiful lake and many great hot springs. It is only 15 min drive (13 km) from the main road you take between Kitami and Akan. Just note that the road to this lake is closed during the heavy snow season.
